Earth Day 2022 is upon us, and this year’s theme is unlike any other: Invest In Our Planet. This theme highlights the effect climate change has on economies and job opportunities, as well as the positive impact sustainable business practices have on the prosperity of both Business and Planet.
Studies show Climate Change worsens scarcity, damages economies, depletes profits and reduces job prospects. Many in industry believe the best and fastest way to combat these issues is through private sector innovation. This idea involves pivoting existing business as well as creating new business models all centered around sustainable strategies and delivering a greener future. Early adopters of such strategies are already seeing fruit, with multiple studies finding “a direct correlation between sustainable business practices, share prices, and business performance.”
Environmental Social Governance (ESG) standards are already yielding positive business impacts. Companies implementing robust ESG strategies have increased profitability, improved stock performance, and enhanced financial standing. Many experts believe sustainability competency will prove key to future success. Businesses must begin to understand the potential sustainable practices to deliver future prosperity and take action to implement those strategies. Few greater ways exist to invest in a company’s future (and the world’s future).
Beyond private enterprise, governments will play a key role in catalyzing this business model shift. Public and political motivations to promote and encourage green business practices continue to rise, whether through partnerships, regulations or incentives. These policy shifts make the jump to sustainable strategies much easier for companies of all sizes.
